Besides the fact that many fish like the salmon can adjust and survive in both fresh and salt water environments, what has been observed in places like the Arctic Halocline , is that you can have a mixture of environments, because salt water is denser than fresh water it sinks and the fresh water lays on top.
Thus fish are able to seek their levels of comfort or tolerance in such mixed environments.
